My family is
not against cinema: Guna
He comes
from a family of politicians — he is the grandson of veteran politician S
Ramadoss and Anbumani Ramadoss is his uncle — but Gunanidhi's interest lies in
arts. The youngster, who finished his MBBS two years ago, has acted in a short
film and tells us that he has his eyes set on the 70mm screen. "I've been
into theatre since my childhood. After graduating, I joined Theatre Lab and did
several street plays and dramas as part of the group. I had played Romeo in
Romeo Juliet, one of its biggest productions. The acting bug had bitten me long
ago," says Guna.
The short,
titled A Stroke Of Dissonance, will be released soon. "It's a
psychological thriller and deals with the struggles of a violinist. We've shown
what an artiste goes through when he doesn't find the right inspiration. In a
metaphorical way, he goes through this infinite loop — he dies and dies till he
gets the right composition. What struck me about the story was the way in which
it was visualised; it has been shot inside a single room," he says.
For his
role, Guna learnt violin from a German violinist. "I trained in violin for
four months from him; he's composed music for the short, too. Kamal Haasan had
pulled off the role of a violinist in Raja Parvai with perfection. I hope
people like my performance, too," he smiles, adding, "I want to take
up acting professionally and I don't want people to think that I've landed
roles because of my background. I wanted to exhibit my skills and this short
film was the perfect ground for it."
Quiz him if
his family is OK with the idea, and he answers, "Of course yes, I got
their permission before taking up this stream. In fact, it was my grandfather
and uncle who asked me to join the theatre institute. My uncle encouraged me to
do this short film as well. My family is not against cinema; they don't like
the cinema culture. They truly believe that cinema is a movement and encourage
me to watch good films. They constantly ask me if I've seen all the good films
that's releasing. I'd started working as a medical officer and whenever good
scripts come my way, I put my practice on hold for it. But now, I'll be
concentrating completely on my acting career."
